What is Shabbat?
I think its amazing how insane our weeks are and we run and run and then suddenly, its shababt and we stop everything and just have 25 hours devoted to creating a connection with Hashem. Yes, obviously we are supposed to be constantly striving to become closer to Hashem, constantly growing. However, this is unfortunately not a reality for most of us. We are so busy doing the things that keep us busy and distract us from our true purpose, so Hashem gave us a special present and that is bambadadm: Shabbat! As Shabbat approaches, are excitement grows stronger and stronger by the second. Yeah, we are excited to sleep ( that’s the sign of getting old btw, when you start taking Shabbat naps) but Shabbat is more than sleep, we are resting our neshamas from the immense mundanely days that surround it during the week and giving it the ability to reach for the sky, to express itself fully without being inhibited by the “chol” of the week. This next point comes from Ariella’s medrash report I cannot remember the original source.
The reason for the emphasis on food and wine on Shabbat is to appease the body and allow it to reach the highest it can physically so it does not stop the neshama from soaring to the highest heights. so grasp the opportunity Shabbat gives you. Also, we all know that there are five levels of the neshama, and the lowest level, the nefesh, is the animalistic part that takes care of our physical needs and is also the source of our desires. During the week we only have the power of the ruach to control and tame the nefesh but on Shabbat the neshama yetaira joins forces with the ruach to help combat the nefesh. So take shababt as the chance to overcome that thing that seemed impossible (key word: seemed bcz nothing Hashem gives us is impossible to overcome) and see how much easier it will be to accomplish. One last thing and ill bid yall ado. I was talking to one of my friends who is in shana Aleph here and she told be the most amazing thing. We all know that there are some places that are imbedded with a sense of Kedusha and usually those places are where we are supposed to feel the most inspired.
Personally, last year when we went to all the kivrei zadikim I didn’t always feel so inspired everywhere that we went. Unfortunately, every time I go to the Kotel I don’t feel an overwhelming feeling of inspiration and connection with Hashem. As I was talking to my friend she was telling me that really is your state of mind at the time, you can be the golden medina, England, down under or even in canata and still feel an immense connection to Hashem, its not where you are physically, rather mentally. If you have worked on yourself to become davek b’Hashem than that connection can be forged even in the depths of harlem. So how do you become davek to Hashem? Well, the Dereach Hashem says *( really the Ramchal in the Derech Hashem) that the only way to cling to Hashem is to become like Him, and we do this by imitating Him in His perfection which is goodness, so by imitating His goodness, we become closer to His perfection and thereby closer to Him. So this is the point where I say” so long farewell I need to say goodbye, adieu, adieu to you and you and you!”
