a light onto the nations
K guys i really did have something that i wanted to talk about this week.. i even was thiking about it before friday..but of course now that im sitting here..i cant for the life of me remember what it was..well first of all i wud like to make an announcement..chem lab is OVER! thats right children i have checked out of lab 3100 forever...no more late nights for now anyway..omh im freezing..k now im just talking nonsense..k now i remember what i was thinking..well one of the thiings i was thinking
this morning i was driving to work..and somehow the time difference between my car and the house is liek three minutes now this may not seem like a big deal not a huge amount of time but when i leave exactly with enuf time to get here it makes a diff..so i put my music in...hit the pedal to the metal and im off zooming down the street . as im approaching the light i notice that bh there are no annoying cars at teh light wanting to make a left turn (in atl u can make a right on a red) so i offer a quick thanx to the One Above for His kindness and continue to speed to work BH gettiing there in time..BH no one was there early..bh it all worked out..( this morning was not an easy one to get outta bed let me tell u!)
so whats teh point of my little trip? well my point is that a few weeks ago i wudnt have noticed taht there is no one at the light and i wudve zoomed off without any thanx any thought and wudve made my way to work..but a few weeks ago as im zoooming off to work i get to the light i see a car at the light..and he wants to make a left turn..fine at this time of morning usually as soon as my car pulls up to the light the sensors go on and it changes.but this car was like a yard and a hlaf away from the sensors..so the light was not changing anytime soon..i had half a mind to get outta my car knock on the person's window andkindly suggest that he move his vehicle up a bit then the light wud change..but i patiently (or not so much)waited in my car nervously noticing the minutes pass by..finally it chnaged he turned and i seriously hit teh pedal..made it to work in the nick of time..and now..i notice when there is no one at teh light so I thank HIm for His kindess..
u get the idea? we dont always appreciate how good we have it..usually were complaining...believe me that morning stuck behind taht driver..man i was not a happy camper..but i learned my lesson..if we dont take the goodness taht we are given every second of it and apppreciate it..then we're given a reason to make sure that we do..we're given the other option..my lab professor was like..i have bad news..this is the last time we have lab..nxt wednesday night u are going to be sitting at home bored not knowing what to do..and ur gonna wish u were in lab doing a chemical test or a distillation;..yea right we all laughed..we're so excited never have to walk into that room..ever again..and i appreciate my wednesday nights more than i ever have..happens to be even in highschool wednesday was always my latest day..it always ended with a double period of math and i was always convinced taht the shir shel yom for wednesday was the longest bcz it was the day that i needed the most help...and now in college its the same..
but we need the busy days to appreciate the calm one..we need the dark to see the light..if there is no contrast, if there is no black then we wont see the white..any artist knows that when painting u have to use contrasting colors to bring out the colors u really want to emphasize..the same holds true when decorating a kitchen..if u have dark countertops then u havelight cabinets..there must be a contrast to fully appreciate the real;y beauty..
adn i think thats why it todays society taht we have the biggest ba'al teshuve movement in all of history..its now taht there is the biggest darkness, spiritual darkness..there is so much aanger and hate in the world today that one cant help but see the bright burning light of Torah stand out..its a beacon in the darkness..and its shining bright..but its only bcz we are amidst such a darkness taht the truth is so glaringly obvious.. and its up to us to be these beacons of light in this time of darkness..we are in winter- in galus..it gets darker earlier..therefore there is more of an opportunity for the light to shine to burn a little brighter...all over the world this is a season of lights..teh christians have their lights artificial twinkly things..even teh african have kawanza..but our lights have a differnt purpose..we dont light up times sq with our candles...cuz thats not how we work...
as jews we have a differnt goal a diff purpose..we dont go for big and bold..we take a different path of tnius and kedusha..we dont make huge statements- we dont have huge cathedrals..we have shtiebels..we dont do the empire state building we have har sinai..we dont make huge changes all in one go..we take it small one step at a time, one candle a time, one persn at a time, one mida at a time, one shabbat at at time, but we know that these changes are real..they last..once the holiday season is up..the twinkle lights get packed up and put away till nxt yr...but our candles keep burning every week..every day in our neshamos..our candles our light builds inside of us a stronger fire a stronger brighter light..and this light doesnt just stay inside of us..it shines and spreads and affects others..
in biology we learned taht one of the basic signs of life is the ability to reproduce..our neshamos our very much alive..bcz the neshama doesnt just stay inside us doing its own thing..its very much alive trying to light the flame in others..in a sense giving life to other neshamos..we dont live for ourselves we live to share, to give over to help others...asRabbi Refson says whats teh point of learning torah if u keep it to yourself..we're not going tohave a final exam at teh end of our lives and if we didnt learn enuf..u fail tahst it..( can u see where my head is these days...lol) we are hear to keep the light in us burning and to ignite the world with our fire..we are the chosen teh people a light on to the nations..and yes its dark out there and yes it may be scary and cold..but when there is such darkness and cold that is when we can really shine..thats when the need for the warmth and light of Torah is needed teh most..when it can be felt the most ..
so now is the time..to truly light the world with the goodness we all have burning inside us
