If you stand for nothing you will fall for anything

Last shabbat we came home from shul only to find a firetruck on our street..we feared the worst but hoped for the best. We didnt see any smoke so that was a good sign..right?

As we got closer that there was two homes involved..two frum families in the community. The one house had a HUGE tree in their front lawn that had fallen over into the neighbor's lawn..and on its way down it had totaled two cars!

The nissim involved this story are incredible. The family with the tree had just put up their mezzuzot the week before, had the tree fallen in any other direction their house would have a gaping hole in it. The other house with the crashed cars..normally the kids are always hanging on the lawn...but this week..they just "happened" to be inside.

The family who had the  tree fall from their lawn are renting the house, the father of the family is a landscaper and when they moved in..he told the landlord that the two trees were dead and rotting and it was only a matter of time before fell..the landlord ignored his warnings..and now months later on a sunny Shabbat morning without a trace of rain or wind..the rootless tree which had been dying from the inside out for ages was just tired of holding on and down it went down...

the lessons here are infinite ill try to contain myself.
The obvious is that of the tree. A tree created millions of roots, some huge some tiny to keep it "rooted" to the ground. The roots provide nourishment for the tree and allow the tree to thrive and grow. Without the millions of connections that create the foundation, its only a matter of time when the tenuous hold is loosened and its all over .

If you stand for nothing you will fall for anything.

This well known axiom is especially relevant to our lives as Jews. We need to create foundations. We need to connect to our energy source and its not only with the "big" things..ie. the "major" mitzvos..connecting to Rabanim..we need to create millions of small connections with every action that we do and create to the ultimate Source. for if we don't connect, if do not create a strong foundation that is rooted in holiness then it is only a matter of time before  we get tired of playing this game. It is only a  matter of time that we holding on is too hard because it has no meaning..so we let go..after all - it was rotting inside anyway .

  1. That is such a good lesson and it's so true! Another thing, the inside is so important - if someone is just doing things by rote but has no feeling for mitzvos then at one point they will give it up...we need to keep that fire burning strong!
B"h for those miracles and I hope the families are all okay and they are able to take care of the damage that was done.
